A Love For Antiques

After nearly 30 years in the business, Tipton is starting to sell more continental furniture even though he could sell English furniture all day long.  "English furniture is very predictable.  I think that's one thing that people like about it.  It's almost like having a certain model of car.  People come to your house and see you've got a triple pedestal mahogany table, Chippendale chairs and - k-ching! - they know that you are certainly doing well.  Like they know what a certain BMW cost, and I think that has influenced why people buy the English stuff.  It's easy to do.  You can get an Oushak rug, get some English furniture and paint the walls yellow and you've got this stock Louisville upper-class look."

Family Room
The artwork in the sitting room is called 'outsider art,' meaning it is by self-taught artists mostly from the South.  The largest painting is the one Tipton purchased from the artist's landlord.  "He moved out leaving things behind.  The artist now has a gallery on Royal Street in New Orleans and a painting of that size would go for $75,000. I think I paid $1,500," says Tipton.
