Prior to buying the house, the Kimmels consulted with their builder, Jim Martin, weighing the pros and cons of restoring the house. Once Martin determined the house was structurally sound, it was a done deal.
Immediately after closing, the work began. "Kip would come over after work and clean. It was my job just to get the garbage out. We were very excited," said Anitra. "Basically everything that was in that house had to be thrown away. It was pretty disgusting." Once the cleaning was finished, a new roof was put on (removing the old asbestos), all new windows were put in (there was not a piece of glass that was not shattered), new heating and air conditioning, and plumbing, wiring, and lighting throughout. To fit their new scheme, sinks, toilets, and some tubs were moved.
