Living In A "Big Girl" House

Just having a mix of things that have been acquired over time isn't the only thing that makes a room work.  For instance Stough points out the reason the family room works is because she split the large room into a multi-use area.  At one end is a sitting area with the large stone fireplace as the focal point and at the other end is an informal dining arrangement.  Also important to a room is scale and proportion.  Because the stone fireplace (made in California of simulated limestone) is so large, Stough balanced it out on the other side of the room with a heavy painted chest, and hanging above it is a tall painting, visually creating equal weight to each side.

Family Room
The Stoughs tore off the existing room and built this larger family room.  Lee wanted the room to look very French, to be casual, and to bring the outdoors in.  Since she didn't want to put drapes on the windows blocking the light or the view, she put heaters in the honed marble floors to bring more warmth into the room in the colder months.  To give the appearance the room had always been there, she aged the trim and beams on the ceiling.
